2012 Predictions
innoweaver's top 3 predictions for this year:
1.The provenance of food. A big issue for 2012 will be where food comes from and its traceability back to the ground or the animals that have produced it. For so long food marketing has been dominated by so-called 'value'. To use an agricultural term, the worm is about to turn and 'value' will be seen as the quality and qualities of what has contributed to the food on the shelf; shoppers and consumers will expect more transparency and high standards from the brands they trust. Look out for more interest and pride in growing your own, especially unusual vegetables; purple carrots anyone?
2.Tablets as a new communication tool. We've all seen evidence of the growth in sales of the iPad, but what makes tablets ground-breaking devices is that they are easy to use for those who have never really got into computers...who? The over 70's, as a generalisation, suddenly don't have to worry about computer security and being able to type, but can use the internet. Expect increased sales of tablets to the well-heeled elderly and these sales will prompt interesting innovation opportunities for other brands in a previously difficult-to-get-to-change target market.
3.The climate. Many more people will become aware of the impacts of increasingly unpredictable extreme weather conditions as those impacts begin to make a difference to their lives and their homes. The weather has always been a talking point in the UK but it will become an action point too as too-small drainpipes and water butts overflow in heavier rain and as increased temperatures at night make it difficult to sleep. People will be looking for new products that can help them cope.
